City got off to a flying start in the Club World Cup as they comfortably beat Wydad AC 2-0 despite going a man down towards the end of the match. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the second minute before Jeremy Doku scored another just before half-time. In the 88th minute of the game, Lewis was given a straight red card for a challenge on Samuel Obeng as his boot caught his opponent in the face, as the full-back swept the ball away.

While the red card decision was upheld by VAR, City boss Guardiola was left fuming with the referee's call as he told "He got the ball, both feet on the grass. He [Ramon Abatti] said, 'No, the feet and leg was high', but it's on the grass! It's natural! Rico never had absolutely any intention, but it doesn't matter, it is what it is."
