Rooney could be set to return to management for the first time since being sacked as Birmingham City boss. The Manchester United legend has been approached by Championship side Plymouth Argyle and is in the frame to take over, according to . Plymouth are in need of a new manager after sacking Ian Foster after just three months in charge. Foster departed in April after a run of eight losses in 11 games. The Pilgrims did manage to rally after his departure and avoided relegation into League One.

Rooney endured a tough time at Birmingham and was ultimately axed after just 15 games in charge. However, his relationship with Plymouth's director of football Neil Dewsnip may help him return to management. Rooney has a "close relationship" with Dewsnip and knows him well from their time together at Everton. Dewsnip worked at the academy when Rooney was rising through the ranks.

WHAT ROONEY HAS SAID

Rooney has made no secret of the fact he wants to return to management. He said in February: "I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it. 

“You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back. I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”

Rooney does have some work lined up as he has been confirmed as a pundit for the BBC during Euro 2024, but it remains to be seen if he will be snapped up by Plymouth too.
